Why is storage capacity important?

Storage capacity dictates how many applications, or Apps, you can store in the device at any give time (see below for an explanation on Apps). Applications can vary in size, with some like the BTC application being bigger than others. It is the applications that take up space in the hardware wallet, not the cryptocurrency.

What is a Ledger application?

Ledger hardware wallets use separate applications to manage your cryptocurrencies. Each cryptocurrency that is supported by Ledger will have a dedicated application which can be downloaded via Ledger Live and installed in the device.

These applications are responsible for generating unique private keys, associated with your 24 word Recovery Phrase, so that you can send and receive cryptocurrencies and have them linked to your account i.e. ensuring proof of ownership.

A high level of security is provided by ensuring that each cryptocurrency is associated with a separate application with an ability to create their own private keys.

Coins supported by Ledger hardware wallets

At present over 1500 coins are supported by Ledger hardware wallets either directly on Ledger Live or via third party apps. If you have a range of coins, you can check if they are supported here.

Do I need Bluetooth connectivity?

The Ledger Nano X provides Bluetooth connectivity to connect with smartphones (connection to computers via USB cable). This allows you to use your Ledger hardware wallets on the go paired with Ledger Live on your smartphone.
